Alice Herzog Marsalis, 86, died Sunday, July 3, 2005, at St. Catherine's Village in Madison. Visitation is at 5 p.m. this evening (Wednesday) at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland. Services are at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Madison with burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Ridgeland are in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Ms. Marsalis was a native of Mayersville, MS and earned her Bachelor's degree from Mississippi State College for Women. She was employed as an executive secretary at Waterway Experiment Station in Vicksburg prior to her marriage. In 1950 she and her family relocated to the Chicago area with the Illinois Central Railroad. She became an elementary school teacher for 12 years in Homewood, IL. She retired from teaching in 1976 and returned to Vicksburg to enjoy golf and fishing with her husband. She was an avid Bridge player and a struggling watercolor artist. She moved to Madison in 1990 and became a regular volunteer at St. Dominic's Hospital and active in the Bridge and art activities at St. Catherine's Village.

Survivors include her brother, Morris S. Herzog of Raymond, MS, daughter, Leslie Hecht of Madison, son, Edwin L. Marsalis, Jr. of Madison; grandchildren, Melissa Suhs of Minooka, IL; Michael Hecht of Chicago, IL, Carey Marsalis of Birmingham, AL and Paige Spratlin of Montgomery, AL. Her great grandchildren are Marsalis Michael James of Birmingham, AL, Mason Lowell Spratlin of Montgomery, AL and Keaton Tyler Suhs of Minooka, IL. She was predeceased by her husband, E. Lowell Marsalis.
