Pioneer Is Dead At Nacogdoches

NACOGDOCHES, Nov. 11.--Andrew Jackson Spradley, 87, pioneer publisher, detective and Nacogdoches county sheriff, died at his home near here Sunday.

``John'' Spradley, as he was known throughout this area, had lived here 65 years, during 30 of which he had a colorful career as sheriff. He retired a quarter century ago.

Known as a fearless officer and expert shot, he was several times wounded but solved a number of murders and a train robbery. He published the Nacogdoches Plaindealer in the 1880s.

Surviving are his wife, a daughter, two brothers and two granddaughters.
