Mrs. Anna Bird Services Held
Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Faye Bird, 56, director of nurses at Panola County General Hospital, were held at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Methodist Church here.
Mrs. Bird, who had been employed by the hospital here since 1950, died as the result of injuries suffered in a three-car accident one mile west of Tyler on State 64 Saturday.
Rev. John Lockhart officiated. Burial was in Oddfellow Cemetery under direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bird joined the staff of the local hospital Aug. 14, 1950 as floor supervisor only three months after the hospital had opened. In 1954 she was appointed as director of nurses, the position she held at the time of her death.
Mrs. Bird, a native of Panola County, was born March 14, 1910. She was an active member of the First Methodist Church and active in many nurses' organizations.
Department of Public Safety officials said the accident occurred when a car driven by Robert Hoyt Farmer, 20, of Tyler collided the rear of a pickup driven by Claude Walker. Officers said Walker was making a left turn when the accident occurred.
After the collision with the pickup, Farmer's car careened in the path of Mrs. Bird's car. The vehicles collided head-on.
Mrs. Bird was enroute to Duncanville to visit relatives when the accident occurred.
Survivors include here husband, Julius V. of Carthage; one son, Judy of Duncanville; one daughter, Mrs. Janice Peterson of Duncanville; three brothers, R. N. Metcalf of Denver, Colo., Ike H. Metcalf of Jackson, Miss., and Curtis Metcalf of Washington, D. C.
Also a sister, Mrs. Lila M. Efierd of Shreveport; two step-sisters, Mrs. Marvin Henry of Wharton and Miss Billie Aillen of Houston; her step-mother, Mrs. Blanch Metcalf of Houston; and five grandchildren.
