Dr. Armand Goldsmith McHenry, Jr.
9/14/1922 - 7/9/2010

Mulhearn Funeral Home
Sterlington Road, Monroe

Dr. Armand Goldsmith McHenry, Jr., well-known physician, farmer, hunter, gardener and outdoorsman, died on Friday, July 9, 2010, of complication from Parkinson's disease.

Dr. McHenry was the last in a direct line of physicians practicing in Monroe whose careers spanned more than 130 years. His father and grandfather practiced here and the three were celebrated as the oldest medical family in Louisiana and the only family to have three doctors in a row to receive their medical degrees from Tulane University. He was the great-grandson of prominent north Louisiana pioneer, Robert E. Russ, for whom Ruston is named. He was renowned among his friends, colleagues, and patients for remembering the names of all of his patients and every dog he bred or raised.

He was born on September 14, 1922 in Monroe to his parents, Irma Tindall Russ McHenry and Dr. Armand Goldsmith McHenry, Sr. He attended Ouachita Parish High School, where he graduated in 1939 at the age of 16. During summers in high school, he worked on the family farm, O-Z-O Plantation, with his uncle, Neal W. McHenry, and attended Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana. He attended Tulane University, receiving both his B.S. and M.D. degrees at the age of 22. As an undergraduate, he lettered in track and boxing and was a member of Delta Kappa Epison Fraternity. After graduating from medical school, he interned at Charity Hospital and was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the Army following WWII and interned for one year at Brooke Army Medical Center and one year at William Beaumont General Hospital in San Antonio. He was discharged as a Captain. He later taught pathology at LSU Medical School.

Dr. McHenry returned to Monroe in 1951 to enter into private practice with his father in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. It was then that he met his wife, June Grisham Lewis McHenry, to whom he was devoted for the remainder of his life. During his long practice he delivered over 10,000 babies. He was on the Board of Governors during the Kennon administration of EA Conway Hospital. He was on the Diplomat American Board of OB/GYN, a Fellow of the American College of OB/GYN and a member of the American, Louisiana and Ouachita Medical Associations and served twice as the Chief of Staff at St. Francis Hospital. He published numerous scholarly medical articles in journals in the United States and Europe. The Ouachita Parish Medical Association honored him with the Doctor of the Year and he received the Mother Gertrude Hennessy Humanitarian Award from St. Francis Hospital. He was associated with Dr. R. G. Jarrell for decades.

Dr. McHenry was an avid hunter, fisherman, farmer and outdoorsman. He bred and raised pointers for over 60 years and had several dogs in the national field trial championship. He authored two hunting books, Becasse: The American Woodcock in Louisiana and Gone to the Dogs, a memoir of his treasured hunting dogs owned throughout his life written long-hand when he was 85. Both books were on the recommended reading list of the American Field magazine. He corresponded his entire adult life with dog breeders and trainers throughout the world. He was a board member of the National and Louisiana Wildlife Federations and a life (and longest serving) member in northeast Louisiana of Ducks Unlimited.

After his retirement, he renewed his earlier passions of bird watching and gardening, particularly restoring and supplementing his father’s eighty year-old collection of camellias and azaleas. Retirement also gave him the opportunity to spend more time with his family and to instill in his children and grandchildren his love of tradition, nature and the outdoors. Like his father before him, he was known as “Doc” to those closest to him.

In addition to his wife of 56 years, he is survived by one son, Richard Lewis McHenry of New Orleans, and one daughter, Marion McHenry Zentner of Monroe. Also survived by five grandchildren, Thomas Zentner, Martin Zentner, Coco Zentner, Victoria McHenry and Marion McHenry. He was preceded in death by his parents and eldest son, Martin Armand McHenry, who died in 1979.

A memorial service will be at Grace Episcopal Church Monday, July 12th at 11:00 AM. The family will received their friends at 10:00 AM at Kilbourne Hall.

Ushers will be Billy Haddad, Bo Shaw, and Scott Zentner. Honorary pallbearers are Nelson Abell, Kent Anderson, Bill Harrison, Jerry Hightower, Dr. R. G. Jarrell, Grisham Lewis, Dr. W. B.
