Arthur Clay Kelly Dies In Newton
NEWTON -- Arthur Clay Kelly, 65, lifetime resident of Lake and immediate vicinity, died at the Newton Hospital after a few days hospitalization for a complicated illness which had kept him confined at home some of the time. He was born in Newton County, a son of the late Marion Franklin and Mary Floy Simmons [sic Emmons] Kelly of Lake. He did construction work with stave mills, and was a member of the Hazel Baptist Church, near Lake.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lilie M. Kelly of Lake; three sons, E. J. of Pascagoula, Forest of Lake, and Sim Kelly of Jackson; six sisters, Mrs. Saphronia Cooksey of Lawrence, Mrs. Virgie Leach and Mrs. Mattie Merle Saterfield [sic Nannie Merle Saterfiel] of Jackson, Mrs. Elsie Bounds of Laurel, Mrs. Allene Goodwin and Mrs. Mary Iv[e]y of Lake; two brothers, Rube and Floyd Kelly, both of Lake; and a number of other relatives.
His funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 2, at the Pine Ridge Church, northwest of Lawrence, with the Rev. O. C. Hull of Walnut Grove officiating. Burial was made in the Pine Ridge Cemetery, Hutson Funeral Home of Newton directing.
Nephews, Herbert Kelly, Malven [sic Melvin] Cooksey, James Albert Kelly, Harold Kelly, Teddy Paul Goodwin, and Jimmy Iv[e]y, served as active pall bearers.
