Artie Leota Jones
Artie Leota Jones, age 87, of Purcell, passed away Monday, June 16, 2008 in Purcell. She was born August 20, 1920 in Konawa. She was the youngest of seven children born to William Asa Grisham and Martha Ellen McCarty Grisham. Artie grew up a farm girl in the Wanette area and graduated from Wanette High School in 1937. On May 12, 1939 she married Paul Francis Jones. Mr. and Mrs. Jones reared one daughter, Marilyn. For many years they owned and operated Paul's Dry Goods in Wayne. In 1960 they moved to Purcell to operate Paul's Variety Store until their retirement in 1983. Artie was a faithful and dedicated member of the Purcell First Baptist Church for the past 48 years. While living in Wayne, she began teaching Sunday school at the Wayne First Baptist Church and continued to teach after moving to Purcell, at the Purcell First Baptist Church. She will be remembered as one who loved to serve the Lord with all her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Edyth Grisham and Beulah Mann; four brothers, including Granville and Eulis as well as two infants; and her great-grandson, Marshall Woods.
She is survived by her husband; daughter, Marilyn Woods and husband, Harold; two grandchildren; six great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at the Purcell First Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Atterberry and Dr. Mike Butler officiating.
Pallbearers were Frank Conway, Glen Frankenberg, Jerry Butler, Randy Beck, Ted Idleman, Merle Clark, Charlie Sherman and Jeff Abernathy. Honorary bearers were her Sunday school class.
Burial was at Hillside Cemetery in Purcell. Arrangements by Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell. Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation or the Purcell First Baptist Church Building Fund.
