Ava W. Whittington
Ava Wilkinson Whittington, 94, of Liberty, died May 14, 2006, at the home of her daughter, Earline W. Hays.
Visitation is 5 to 9 tonight at Brown Funeral Home in Liberty. Visitation continues at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Whittington Memorial United Methodist Church, at the intersection of Highway 567 and King Road, until services there at 11 a.m. The Rev. Joe Felder, the Rev. Charles Sullivan, the Rev. Hong Yoo and the Rev. Earnest Whittington will officiate. Burial will be in Whittington Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Whittington was born March 2, 1912, in Amite County to Howard Wilkinson and Julia Wells Wilkinson.
She worked as a seamstress at Kellwood. She was a charter member of Whittington Memorial United Methodist Church and was active for 50 years. She only missed four or five Sunday services during that period. She served as treasurer of the church for the past 19 years. She has not missed a Whittington Homecoming in 49 years. She participated in the Golden Age luncheons and Golden Dreamers Church group activities.
She was a loving mother and had a great concern for others. She enjoyed working her garden so she could share with others. She was famous in the community for her egg custard pies.
Mrs. Whittington was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 55 years, Rob Whittington; her twin sister, Eva Sullivan; one brother, Floyd Wilkinson; a son-in-law, James M. Hays; a sister-in-law, Bernice Whittington; and a good friend, Miss Ellen Brister.
Survivors include one daughter, Earline W. Hays of Liberty; one sister-in-law, Edna Swearingen of Liberty; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers will be Thomas ``Fuzz'' Jackson, Bruce Jackson, Tony Wilkinson, Lavere Jackson, Euley C. ``Sonny'' Rider and Charlie Rider. Honorary pallbearers will be Tyler and B.J. Jackson, and Havard, Ray, Don, Faron, Baisel, Floyd Wilkinson Jr. and Boyd Wells.
