Barbara Salter Browne (aka Johnstone)
1922-2012

Barbara Salter Browne passed away peacefully on Monday, December 17, 2012 at the McGraw Hospice Center near the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

Barbara Jane Salter was born to Dr. Robert M. Salter and Mrs. Sara G. Salter in Columbus, Ohio, on June 29, 1922. She was reared in Columbus and Wooster, Ohio where her father was on the faculty of Ohio State University. In 1941, she married Edmund Broadus Browne in Raleigh, NC and enjoyed a 45 year marriage, primarily living in Athens, Georgia, where Dr. Browne served as a Director of Research for the College of Agriculture of the University of Georgia. Following the death of Dr. Browne in 1987, Mrs. Browne later married, in 1989, Dr. Francis E. Johnstone, Jr., a retired faculty member of the University of Georgia. She moved with Dr. Johnstone to Jacksonville in 1997 where she built a home in Cypress Village, a retirement community adjacent to the Mayo Clinic. In June 2012, now twice widowed, Mrs. Browne moved to Fleet Landing in Atlantic Beach.

Barbara Browne enjoyed the roll of homemaker. She was an exceptional cook who enjoyed trying out new recipes on friends and family. She also enjoyed an active social life and was an accomplished bridge player, an avid reader, and a devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and her two husbands. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Philips (Ted) of Richmond, VA., her son, Joseph M. “Jette” Browne (Nancy) of Jacksonville Beach, FL, daughters Sara B. McKnight (Tom) of College Station, TX., Maud B. Nugent (Mike) of Atlanta, GA., and Barbara Salter Browne, II of Rancho Dominguez, CA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held at Palms Presbyterian Church, 3410 Third St. South, in Jacksonville Beach on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 11:00 AM. Following services, Mrs. Browne's cremains will be interred in the Columbarium at Palms Presbyterian.
