Bertie Elizabeth Jones Otto
Bertie Elizabeth Jones Otto, age 98, died Sunday at Britthaven Nursing Home in Goldsboro, NC.
Born November 5, 1905 in Johnston County to the late James P. and Amanda Lee Jones of the Crantock Community, she was the widow of Edgar Bodo Otto and was preceded in death by a son, Horace Otto, brothers, J.P. Jones, Lisbon Jones, Utley Jones, Moses Jones and Percy Jones and sisters, Eva Jones West and a daughter-in-law, Eunice Otto.
From 1928 until 1952 Mrs. Otto was a homemaker and farmer. In 1952, she joined the staff at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh, where she worked until her retirement in 1969. She was a longtime member of the Hopewell Free Will Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Underwood Funeral Home in Smithfield with the Rev. Steve Lawson to officiate. Burial will follow in Knollwood Memorial Park US 70 East Clayton, NC.
Surviving are her sons, Charlie Otto and wife, Shirley of Smithfield and Marshall Otto and wife, Linda of Raleigh; daughters, Jewell O. Stanley of Goldsboro and JoAnn Chapman and husband, Younger of Jonesboro, AK; sisters, Esther Matthews of Smithfield and Virginia Speight of Raleigh; brother, Seth Jones of Raleigh; brother-in-law, Paul K. Otto; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one greatgreat-grandson.
The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 just prior to the funeral service. Although flowers are welcome and will be appreciated, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Hopewell Freewill Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
