Bettye Jo Gilbert
Mrs. Bettye Jo Gilbert, age 84 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Villa Marie Nursing Center.
Bettye was born on January 24, 1932 in West Monroe, Louisiana the daughter of William R. and Achsah Thrasher Prince. She was married on December 24, 1951 in Jonesboro, Louisiana to Welton B. “Bo” Gilbert.
Bettye graduated from high school in Jonesboro, Louisiana and later attended Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in Ruston, Louisiana.
A resident of Jefferson City since 1976, Bettye co-owned Capital City Research Company for years and was proud of the several books they published. She spent many years researching and documenting family genealogy as well as working to help others with their genealogical research. Bettye was a homemaker the majority of her life and always cherished time with her family, especially her grandchildren and their activities.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and also a member of the Optimist Club, the Order of the Eastern Star, and Daughters of the American Revolution.
Bettye loved being outdoors in her garden and even received an award for the “garden of the month.” In her free time, she was an avid reader, particularly of historical novels and researching genealogy. Bo and Bettye enjoyed their travels and living in various places.
Survivors include: three children, Shirley Gilbert Gassen of Cypress, Texas, Michael Gilbert (wife Rose) of Harahan, Louisiana, and Sean “Pat” Gilbert (significant other, Jan Conley) of Jefferson City, Mo.; one daughter-in-law, Theresa Gilbert of Jefferson City, Mo.; one half-sister, Dee Dee Littlepage of Silsbee, Texas; six grandchildren, Dr. Matthew Gassen (wife Megan), Jennifer Woodward (husband Scott), Nicholas Gilbert, Aaron Gilbert (wife Dana), Christopher Gilbert (fiancĂ© Keri Moore), and Kellie Gilbert; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Claiborne Gilbert on July 5, 2005; and one half-brother.
Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2016.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2016 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Doyle Sager officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at Riverview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice Compassus or the Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders Association.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
