Bill was born June 3, 1923, in Comanche, the son of Woodrow ``Woody'' and Edna Jones McDaniel. He served in the U.S. Navy on a PT boat as a gunner's mate first class during World War II, from Feb. 2, 1942 to Oct. 5, 1945.
He and Verla Yvonne Hall were married on March 15, 1945, in Comanche. They lived there for more than 20 years while they raised their two sons, moving to Duncan in 1967. Bill retired from Halliburton after 32 years as a machinist, where he took great pride in doing high-quality work.
One of the greatest joys in his life was coaching youth football and baseball for many years in Comanche, and then football in Duncan at Mark Twain, Lee and Plato grade schools. It was always a joy to him when he could help someone else; he was a great example of one with a servant's heart, yet always ready to tease and cut-up.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Methodist Men, and after his retirement, worked many years as a volunteer with the Chisholm Trail Hospice.
He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 61 years on Oct. 12, 2006. She was always the apple of his eye, and it was her influence that helped him transform from being a good man to being a wonderful Christian man. With her passing, his life's last responsibility had been fulfilled.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Terry B. and Judy McDaniel of North Charleston, S.C., and Billy W. ``Buddy'' and Beverly McDaniel of Duncan; a brother, Ernest McDaniel of Palm Desert, Calif., five grandchildren and their spouses, Brian and Jenny McDaniel, Braden and Gina McDaniel, Monty and Stacy McDaniel, Ryan and Bryan Terrill, and Allyson McDaniel; three great-grandchildren, Noah, Henry and Bailey; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Woodrow, Guy and Isom McDaniel; and four sisters, Helen Young, Ruby Horton, Lola Gray and Etta Mehring.
Bearers will be his grandsons and Steve McCord, Gorden Vincent, Terry Dennard and Wayne Houston.
Honorary bearers will be Leonard Hall, George Clopton and Freddy McCord.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church or Chisholm Trail Hospice.
