Billy Ray Freeman
Funeral services for Mr. Billy Ray Freeman were held Friday, July 16, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. in the Laird Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tony Ganey officiating. Burial followed with full military honors in the Monterey Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Freeman was born March 21, 1936 in Bude, MS, the son of the late Norman and Florine Campbell Freeman. He was a retired captain in the United States Marine Corp. He served 20 years of active service which included one tour in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded several medals and awards for his service which include the National Defense Service Medal, Naval Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star.
After retirement he worked for the Natchez Democrat, Concordia Sentinel and Catahoula News Booster. He had a passion for writing and was an avid contributor to opinion columns for area newspapers. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and was past governor of the Natchez Moose Lodge. Mr. Freeman was of the Baptist faith. He was a devoted husband of 42 years and a loving father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jackson Freeman of Monterey; his daughters, Wanda Gatlin of Monterey, Rhonda and husband Kenny Boyd of Natchez, Jackie Dunigan of Monterey, Lisa and husband Al Neal of Denham Springs, LA, Monica and husband Mitchell Field of Cleveland, MS, and thirteen grandchildren.
Pallbearers were members of the United States Marine Corp Honor Guard.
