West Monroe's Man's Sentence Is Suspended

Charles W. Walker, a 29-year-old West Monroe man received a suspended sentence on a charge of negligent homicide in Fourth District Court Friday.

Walker's sentence of four years at hard labor at Louisiana State Penitentiary was suspended, and he was remanded to the Louisiana Department of Corrections for a supervised probabion for five years.

Walker was sentenced for a fatal shooting of 31-year-old Billy Ray Mercer of West Monroe on the morning of June 21, 1972. The shooting reportedly occurred at Walker's apartment, 2305 Trenton St., West Monroe.

Judge Lemmie O. Hightower presided over the sentencing.
