Bobby “Jack” Jackson Smith
Bobby Jackson Smith, 71, a fourth generation Winn Parish son passed away on November 21, 2006 at his home near Joyce after a lengthy illness. Jack was born on January 21, 1935, the youngest son of the late Walter Robert Smith and Camilla Isabel White Smith. He was reared in the Royal community near Sikes and spent most of his life living and working in Winn Parish.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his four brothers Stacy, Delmer, Curt and Maxel; and a sister Nadine S. Simmons.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Virginia Hubbard Smith; one son, Robert D. Smith of Winnfield; two daughters, Deborah Smith Henry and husband Gary Henry of Bossier City and Brenda Smith Usrey and husband Mickey Usrey of Winnfield; three granddaughters, Nicole Usrey, Calli Henry, Kristan Usrey; one grandson, Matthew Walter Henry; and one sister, Nellene S. Fisher of Monroe.
In his youth, Jack served the public as a radio dispatcher for the Louisiana State Police. Although he later served as a Winn Parish Deputy Sheriff and a Winn Parish school bus driver, his most enduring and productive work was with the land--just as his ancestors. He was a logging contractor for over thirty years and most recently a cattle and hay farmer. Jack was a conservator of the land, taking care to enrich his property for future generations. His strong ethical compass guided him in his actions throughout his lifetime. Discussing local and state politics was one of his favorite pastimes as was sharing his ideas as a mentor to younger generations.
