Carle Thorne, Principal, Dies of Stroke

Carle Thorne, principal of O. M. Roberts Elementary School and teacher in Dallas County schools more than thirty years, died Sunday in a local hospital a few hours after being stricken with a heart attack. His home was at 1511 McKell.

Mr. Thorne had been principal of the Roberts School for seven years. He formerly was principal of Cement City and Sidney Lanier Elementary Schools. Born in Wooten Wells, Robertson County, Mr. Thorne was reared on a farm in Leon County where his parents moved soon after his birth. He earned his degree at NTSTC in Denton and immediately began teaching around Dallas.

During World War I he was an officer in the Casualty Battalion that returned wounded soldiers to their homes. He was a member of the First Baptist Church; a thirty-second-degree Mason, a member of Tannehill Lodge and the Hella Temple Shrine.

Surviving Mr. Thorne are three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Moore, Mrs. Lillian E. Sigmund and Mrs. W. H. Reid, and two brothers, R. J. Thorne and M. C. Thorne, all of Dallas.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday in Weiland's Funeral Church by Robert H. Coleman and the Rev. T. Talbot. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetary [sic Cemetery] with Tannehill Masonic Lodge in charge.
