Carmelite Enright Thornton ``Cone''
Cone Thornton, 88, a native of New Orleans, died at her home in Zachary on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009. She was a homemaker and longtime civic activist. She dedicated her life to helping others and to the betterment of Zachary. She was especially proud of the many achievements of the women of Zachary, both in business and politics. In 2001, she was the Zachary Rotary Citizen of the Year, an award she shared with longtime friend, Janet Cavin. She was a member of the East Baton Rouge Beautification Commission, the 1984 World's Fair Commission and a longtime member of the Town and Country Reviewers. She volunteered as an auxiliary at Lane Regional Medical Center for 43 years. She served as a Eucharistic minister and a member of St. John the Baptist Altar Society for more than 40 years.
Visitation at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Zachary, on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. until service at 1 p.m., conducted by the Rev. M. Jeffery Bayhi. Burial in Port Hudson National Cemetery.
Survived by two sons, David M. Thornton, and Earl M. Thornton and his wife, Angela M. Thornton, all of Zachary; sister, Helen M. Maggard, of Arlington, Va.; brother, Melvin J. Enright, of Baton Rouge; four grandchildren, Lee Thornton and wife Elizabeth, Kathryn E. Thornton, Matthew T. Thornton and wife Catherine, and Michael M. Thornton; and great-grandchild, Grace E. Thornton. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Candace Powell Thornton; and ``honorary daughter,'' Charlene McCoy Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernst Seemann Thornton; parents, Michael and Helen Enright; and brothers, Paul and Michael Enright.
Pallbearers will be Lee Thornton, Matthew Thornton, Michael Thornton, Dr. Kemp Amacker, James Lee Peay and Gene Genevay.
Honorary pallbearers are John J. Gallaty and Rick Smith.
The family wishes to extend their love and thanks to Mrs. Cone's ``Angels'' who took such good care of her: Shemika Johnson, Mae Ella Nelson, Barbara O'Connor, Georgia Knighten, Jane Hills, June Williams, Sharon Collins, Sheri Dean Robinson, Francilia Cotton and very special ``Angel,'' Ivory Brooks. The family would also like to acknowledge the devoted priests who guided her in her spiritual path: the Rev. Robert Stine, the Rev. Henry Vavasseur and the Rev. Kenny Laird.
Memorial donations may be made in her memory to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 4727 McHugh Road, Zachary, LA 70791.
