On November 7, 1939 Tom and Dora Lee Harkness were entrusted with a beautiful gift. A daughter they named Carol Jean. She was raised by her mother but loved the many visits with her father and half siblings Judy Harkness and Tommy Ross Harkness. She married the love of her life, Billy Airhart, on June 1, 1957. Over the next few years they worked to build a home for the seven children they brought into the world. Buddy, Sissy, James, Johnny, Candy, Peanut, and Lissy were Carol's pride and joy. She was their mother, their playmate, their teacher, their fiercest defender, their protector, their cheerleader, and their friend. She worked as hard as any man and together with her husband made sure her children were raised to work hard and know the value of family. She never tired of setting off on adventure with her husband. From Virginia to California and up to Alaska they traveled “God's Country” side by side. All those years their family was growing 25 grandchildren and 20 great-grand children with 3 on the way, filled their lives with laughter, their arms with hugs, and their cheeks with kisses. In December 1998, Billy went on ahead to make sure Jesus had things ready for his wonderful wife. On April 15, 2009 he stood beside Jesus as the Shepherd called her name. She knew his voice. As her precious children said goodbye, she set out on her final adventure. We will miss them both until we join them there.
