Local Soldier Killed in Action

Pfc. Clarence E. Rollen, 20, of Winnsboro was killed March 14 while on combat duty in Viet Nam.

His mother, Mrs. Olena L. Cureington, Route 5, was notified last Thursday by telegram that her son had been killed, after she had first received the news from an Army officer.

The body was returned to the United States by airlift, and was brought to Winnsboro Monday night from Jackson, Miss. The body was accompanied by a military escort.

Funeral services were held here Wednesday afternoon at First National Chapel, and burial was in Ogden Cemetery.

Officiating at the rites were the Rev. Jimmie Shepherd, The Rev. Lee Smith and the Rev. Larry Walker.

Military services were conducted at the graveside.

The young soldier had been in Viet Nam for only a month. He had been in Winnsboro on leave before returning to duty, to go to Viet Nam.

He enlisted in the Army last September 1.

He had been employed at the Shop-Rite store here until it was closed last year. He was employed at The Franklin Sun, in the printing department, for several months in 1965.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, are a brother, Ronnie Rollen, Rt.5, Winnsboro: his stepfather, Willie Cureington, Rt. 5, Winnsboro; two stepbrothers, Billy Ray Cureington, Monroe, and Roy Earl Cureington, Winnsboro; a stepsister, Helen Cureington, Rt. 5, Winnsboro; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Mrs. Clarence Leonard, Rt. 3, Winnsboro, and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rollen, Sr., Winnsboro.
