Mrs. Haney Killed Instantly, Four Hurt in 4-Car Smash-up

Mrs. Claudia Evalina Haney, 62, Antioch community housewife, was instantly killed in a four-car collision at 6:16 p.m. Friday, about five and one-half miles south of Longview on Highway 149 according to State Highway Patrolman Glenn Elliott.

Four persons were reported injured in the accident. They were identified as William M. Dark, Rt. 5, Longview; Arlin C. Screws, Rt. 3, Carthage; Lonnie W. Harris, Carthage, and Mrs. Lois Barber Capp, Rt. 2, Carthage.

Mrs. Capps was brought to Carthage for first aid and taken to Shreveport for hospitalization. Screws and Harris were taken to the Gregg Memorial Hospital, Longview.

According to Patrolman Elliott, this is what happened: Dark was traveling southeast on Highway 149 when a car driven by Harris overtook Dark's car striking it from the rear. The impact threw the Harris car across the highway into the opposite lane and was in collision with a car being driven toward Longview by Mrs. Capps. A fourth car, driven by Hester Nero, Rt. 1, Tatum struck the rear of the Capps automobile. Mrs. Haney was a passenger in the Capp [sic Capps] car and was on her way to her daughter, who is a patient in a Longview hospital.

Patrolman Glenn Elliott said charges will be filed against Harris as a result of the collision.
