Clyde Whittington, Sr.
(July 20, 1918 - June 8, 2011)

Clyde Esco Whittington, Sr., 92, of Magnolia, MS, died June 8, 2011, at the University Medical Center in Jackson, MS.

Mr. Whittington was born on July 20, 1918, in the East Fork community and was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Esco Whittington, his mother, Annabel Robinson Whittington, and a brother, Maxie Martin Whittington.

Mr. Whittington was a member of the Liberty Lodge masons and a life-long member of the East Fork Baptist church where he was ordained a deacon in 1946. He served as chair of the board of deacons, taught Sunday School classes, was church organist for some fifty years and held other various positions in the church.

Mr. Whittington was a graduate of Liberty High School, Southwest Junior College, and Mississippi State University. A veteran of World War II, he was a pilot in the Army Air Force and received further pilot training at the State Teacher's College in Chillicothe, MO, State Teacher's College in St. Cloud, MN, and at Notre Dame University in South Bend, IN.

Mr. Whittington was a life-long resident of Amite County and a retired cattleman. He also taught history at East Fork School and was an instructor in farming skills for the Veterans' Affairs.

Widely known as an avid historian, Mr. Whittington compiled data for the 150th and 175th anniversaries of the East Fork Baptist Church and most recently, contributed to its 200th celebration. In addition, he was a source that other local churches consulted to establish records.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Mrs. Freddie Bea Garner Wilson Whittington of Magnolia; a daughter, Mrs. Anna Minks (James) of Canton, MI; a son, Clyde E. Whittington, Jr., of Liberty; a granddaughter, Alicia Ann Whittington of New Orleans, LA; a grandson, Chuck Reynolds of Detroit, MI; a great-grandson, Garrison Whittington of New Orleans, LA.

Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be at the East Fork Baptist Church in Smithdale from 5 to 8 PM on Friday, June 10, and then again from 11 AM until 3 PM. The service is scheduled for 3 PM at the church with burial to follow immediately in the East Fork Cemetery. Reverends Alton Foster and Talmadge Smith will officiate.

Pallbearers are John Newman, Tim Wilkinson, Randy Wall, Cam Sharp, Ray Clower and Max Whittington. Honorary Pallbearers are Bill Sharp, James Lester Newman, Everett Wilson and Jimmy Bilbo.

Music will be provided by Peggy Sharp, John Campbell and Jimmy Bilbo.
