Rev. Huthnance

FORT BRAGG -- The Reverend Conly C. Huthnance, 64 creator and chairman of the Chapel of the Redwoods radio program, and retired Baptist minister, died today at his Fort Bragg home after a lengthy illness.

Rev. Huthnance was born in Louisiana and came to Fort Bragg in 1936 from Lakeport. He was pastor of the First Baptist Church until ill health forced his retirement in 1948. He then constructed a small chapel adjacent to his home, where he began broadcasting the Chapel of the Redwoods program on station KDAC.

The Rev. Huthnance was a past trustee of both the elementary and high school boards, a member of the Glenmora, Louisiana Masonic Lodge, and Sapphire Chapter 230, Order of the Eastern Star, Fort Bragg. He served as a chaplain during World War II.

Mr. Huthnance, who lived in California 43 years, is survived by his wife, Aline, a third grade teacher at Redwood Elementary School, a daughter, Mrs. Lois A. Schmidt, of Redlands, a brother, Henry Huthnance, of Louisiana, two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Morland, San Jose, and Mrs. Ellen White, of Dallas, Texas, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harry B. Transchell and the Rev. Grant Hanson officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Memorial Park.

Friends may call until noon Saturday at the Cannarr-Fairlee Funeral Home, Fort Bragg. The family has expressed a preference for donations to the First Baptist Church Memorial Building Fund.
