Curtis Jackson Prock 1913 - 2011

Internationally known big game guide Curtis Jackson (C.J.) Prock, 97, died May 21, 2011 in Lewisville, Texas after a brief illness. At the time of his death, he resided in an assisted living center. A memorial service was held in Lewisville, Texas. His ashes will be buried in the family plot in Coolidge, Ariz. at a later date.

Mr. Prock had hunted the Mogollon Rim country for 70 years.

Born Sept. 1, 1913 to Charles H. Prock and Beulah Mae McCarty Prock in Hopkins County, Texas, he and his extended family moved to Eloy, Ariz. in 1934 during the Great Depression to work as migrant laborers. During his life in Eloy, he contracted migrant workers, owned a grocery store, and then served as a Pinal County constable from 1948 to 1953. He later ran a dairy in Camp Verde before moving to Phoenix and beginning his career as a professional hunting guide.

Mr. Prock's clients hunted primarily bear and mountain lion in Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho, and jaguar in Mexico and British Honduras (now Belize).

In 1985 he moved to Heber, and then settled in Young in 1993 where he lived until 2003 when, because of failing health, he moved to Texas to live with his son, Jerry D. Prock, who predeceased him in 2008.

He is survived by daughters, Barbara D. Smith of Lewisville, Texas and Linda Sue Prock Gretzon of Phoenix; his wife, Dorothy Prock of Eloy; and one sister, Nina Fay Wright of New Mexico.

Other survivors include daughter-in-law, Joyce Prock of Bedford, Texas; his former wife, Christine Trout of Mesa; grandsons, Mark Smith and wife Rosimare of Corinth, Texas, and Erik Prock and wife Hope of St. Louis, Mo.; granddaughters, Cynthia Smith McCready and husband Dru of Coppell, Texas and Candace Smith Moody, and husband T.J., and Leslie Prock Norton and husband Andrew, all of Keller, Texas.

Other grandchildren are Richard Frank and wife Amy, Diana Frank Leck and husband James, and Christal Frank Duke and husband Daniel, all of Phoenix; and 20 great-grandchildren.

His first wife, Eveline Barber, preceded him in death.
