San Antonian Dies In Detroit Crash
Dale S. Grisham, 32, a San Antonio pilot for Zantop Air
Transport Inc., was among four killed Wednesday morning in
the crash of a cargo plane near Detroit.
The plane, attempting an instrument landing, fell about
four miles southwest of Detroit's Metropolitan Airport
-- its destination. Grisham was a passenger on a routine
Cleveland-to-Detroit cargo flight.
Duane A. Zantop, one of the owners of the cargo airline firm,
said there was as yet ``no known cause or suggestion of cause.''
The control tower operator said he had contact with the pilot until
``about a minute before it crashed'' at 2:24 a.m.
The plane plowed through trees, strewing wreckage hundreds of yards.
Grisham, another passenger, the pilot, and the second officer were all
employes [sic] of Zantop. An eight-year veteran pilot, Grisham had
been flying with Zantop three months. Previously he had flown for
Capitol Airways, another freight airline.
He had lived with his mother, Mrs. Harry B. Gibbs, 8722 Post Oak Dr.
He was a graduate of Brackenridge High School and had attended San
Antonio College and Trinity University.
Also surviving him are his daughters, Lu Anne, 7, and Valeria, 6;
a son, Dale F. [sic S.] Jr., 5, all of Sandia, Tex.; and a sister,
Mrs. Douglas N. Jackson, Layton, Utah.
Mrs. Gibbs said he would be brought to San Antonio for burial.
