Dan McCall Brazil
Memorial services for Dan McCall Brazil, 83, of Lufkin, will be held Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Lufkin's First Baptist Church, where Dan was baptized as a child. Officiating will be Reverend Don Thrasher. A private family burial will precede the service.
Mr. Brazil was born October 5, 1927, in Lufkin, Texas, to the late Sarah Emma (McCall) and Judge Carmen Ercelle Brazil. He died Friday, April 15, 2011 in a Lufkin nursing facility.
Mr. Brazil was a graduate of Lufkin High School, Baylor University and Baylor Law School. He was a former City Attorney for Lufkin and former County Attorney and District Attorney for Angelina County. He married Martha Agnes McMillan on November 17, 1956. He was very active in Community Concerts for many years and served in many offices. He and his late wife believed in supporting the arts and bringing quality entertainment and culture to Lufkin.
Dan loved newspapers and read The Lufkin New[s], The Dallas Morning News, and The Houston Chronicle daily. While in high school, he served on the newspaper staff when it was named Panther Growls and Mr. Allred was the sponsor. He also served on the Annual (Fang) Staff. At Baylor University, he was on the staff of the Round-Up (yearbook) and Lariat (newspaper). He would still enjoy a Lariat and Waco Tribune Herald whenever his daughter brought them for him to read. If there are newspapers in heaven, Dan will be involved in some way!!! He was also a member of the Baylor Chamber of Commerce, which takes care of the mascots (bears) and bear pits.
Dan served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War at the Pentagon. He was a lifelong member of Lufkin's First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon. Until recently, he served his Sunday School department by completing the records every Sunday (rarely missing).
Dan was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Little Carmen; and wife, Martha Brazil. He is survived by his cat, Samantha; his daughter, Carol and husband Jack Brown of Gatesville; sister, Sarah Jane (Sa-Sa) Brazil Thames of Lufkin; nieces, Ina Jane Thames of Lufkin, Mary Anne Thames Clement and husband, Jay, and children, Jake and Sarah, all of Austin.
The family would like to thank both Dr. Samuel Santiago and Dr. Josefa Santiago, Dr. Varughese Samuel, Dr. Thomas Duncan, and Dr. Taylor McKewen. Dan was not always the best patient to cooperate with orders of the doctors but he still received excellent care. The family would also like to thank Providence Home Health Care (Travis Nerren and Kathy Stampy) and Agape Home Health Agency (Brian, Pam, Angela, Denise, and one of the finest Christians, Case Manager Angie McLelland). Special thanks to Kathy Barrett at American Real Estate for being more than a realtor to the family. Finally, special thanks to Parkwood Place (the only five star facility in Lufkin), Mandy, Brianne, Misty, Kirsten and Alisha, Jimmy Miranda and Taisha, and Patrick and Tiffani for keeping Mr. Dan in line.
The family will receive friends and loved ones from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.

The family asks that, in memory of Dan, you call or visit a shut-in. A kind word or a call is free and can certainly brighten one's day. Don't put it off or worry if it is a bother. Simple acts of kindness mean the most. We hope you are at peace, Dan!
