David Smith Gilcrease
On the evening of December 12, 2015 at 11:15 pm, David Smith Gilcrease died at his son David Lyn's home surrounded by family in Huntsville, Texas. David was 79 years old. He was born on October 22, 1936 in Negrette, Louisiana to Edward and Hazel Gilcrease where his Aunt Zedda helped deliver him. He always had a special place in his heart for her. Shortly after he was born his family had to move their home to Zwolle, La because Toledo Bend Lake was created.
David lived in Zwolle until his brother Charles, a few friends, and himself signed up in the buddy program under the United States Air Force. They were shipped to boot camp in Illinois, and then stationed in South Carolina where he was an airplane mechanic. After his time in the Air Force, David moved his growing family to Huntsville, Texas where he started working at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He retired from TDCJ after 34 years of service.
David is survived by his daughter Judith “Judy” Elborai and husband Youssef; son David Lyn Gilcrease and wife Kate; son Karlton (Katt) Gilcrease and significant other Susan; son Dennis Gilcrease and wife Debra; son Micah Gilcrease and wife Amy; grandchildren Eric Gilcrease and wife Tammy, Shanna Moore and husband Charles, Kreig Gilcrease, Brian Grahmann, Micah David Grahmann, Sharon Venglar and husband Jonathan, Denise Gilcrease, Dee Dee Gilcrease, and Devin Gilcrease; and great-grandchildren Joshua, Jason, Steven, Justin, Ashley, Sophia, and Isabella.
David Smith Gilcrease is preceded in death by his parents Edward and Hazel Adams Gilcrease; sister Merlene Gilcrease Barrow; brothers Henry Gilcrease, Charles Gilcrease, and Thomas Gilcrease; and granddaughter Denise Ann (Nina) Gilcrease.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM till 7:00 PM on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 17, 2015 in the chapel at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. Interment will follow the service at Pine Prairie Freewill Baptist Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas.
