D. M. STOVALL

SHREVEPORT (Special) -- Funeral services for D. M. Stovall, 77, member of a North Louisiana pioneer family, were held at 2:30 p.m. today at the Cedar Grove Methodist Church in Shreveport.

Interment followed in the Forest Park cemetery there.

A resident of Sikes for more than 20 years, Mr. Stovall organized the Methodist church there and served as Sunday School superintendent until he moved to Shreveport in 1931.

He was a native of Jackson parish, member of the Cedar Grove Methodist Church and superintendent of that church's Sunday School for 14 years.

Mr. Stovall had resided at 5912 Southern Ave. in Shreveport, and was a retired insurance agent. He died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, after a lengthy illness.

Survivors include his widow, of Shreveport; four sons, D. M. Stovall, Jr., John Stovall and Karl Stovall, all of Carthage, Tex., and the Rev. James L. Stovall of Baton Rouge; five daughters, Mrs. J. Curtis Prince, Mrs. J. R. Fouts, Mrs. Melvin Finuf and Mrs. R. A. Ferguson, all of Shreveport, and Mrs. Alvin McCarty of Rayville; 28 grandchildren and one great grandson; three sisters, Mrs. Willie Dickerson, Chatham, Mrs. May Douglas, DeQuincy and Mrs. J. R. Southard, Texas City, Tex.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

D. M. Stovall, 77, Formerly of Winn, Dies in Shreveport

Dennis M. Stovall, 77, died at his home in Shreveport Saturday afternoon after a long illness. Last rites were conducted Monday with burial in Shreveport.

A member of a prominent North Louisiana pioneer family, Mr. Stovall was born in Stovall, Jackson Parish, but spent most of his life in Dodson and Sikes. While residing at Sikes he organized a Methodist Church and was superintendent of the Sunday School. Mr. Stovall served as a member of the Winn Parish School Board at one time and also in other community officers.

During his residence in Shreveport for the past 20 years he has been an insurance agent.

Survivors include his widow, a member of the Gaar family of Winn Parish, now of Shreveport; nine children, D. M. Stovall, Jr., of Carthage, Tex., Mrs. Velda Prince of Shreveport, Mrs. Maurine McCarty of Rayville, Karl and John of Carthage, Tex., Rev. James L. Stovall of Baton Rouge, and Mrs. Sarah Fouts, Mrs. Evelyn Finuf, and Mrs. Carlotta Ferguson, all of Shreveport; and three sisters, Mrs. Willie Dickerson of Chatham, Mrs. Mae Douglas of DeQuincy, and Mrs. Hazel Southard of Texas City, Texas.

Attending the funeral from Winn Parish were Shelby Gaar of Winnfield, and Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Gaar and Roy Gaar of Dodson.

Father of Local Men Succumbs To Long Illness; Funeral Held in Shreveport

D. M. Stovall Sr., 77, of 5912 Southern Avenue, Shreveport, died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday following a long illness.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Cedar Grove Methodist Church. The Rev. Roy Mouser, pastor, was the officiating minister. He was assisted by the Rev. George Harbuck, pastor of the Broadmoor Methodist Church.

Burial was in Forest Park Cemetery under direction of the Rose-Neath Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were David McCarty, Danny McCarty, Johnny Stovall, Herbert Branen, Steven Stovall, Jimmy Ray Fouts, Paul Prince and Chuck Prince.

Mr. Stovall, a member of a North Louisiana pioneer family, was born in Stovall, Jackson Parish, Louisiana.

He was a member of the Cedar Grove Methodist Church where he served 14 years as superintendent of the Sunday School and for many years as chairman and member of the board of stewards.

While residing in Sykes [sic Sikes], he organized a Mehtodist [sic Methodist] Church and was superintendent of the Sunday School. He resided in Sykes [sic Sikes] for more than 20 years and came to Shreveport in 1931.

Mr. Stovall was a retired insurance agent who had worked for Rose-Neath.

Survivors include his widow and nine children, D. M. Stovall Jr. of Carthage, Mrs. Velda Prince of Shreveport, Mrs. Maurine McCarty of Rayville, La., Karl Stovall of Carthage, John Stovall of Carthage, the Rev. James L. Among those attending the funeral service from Carthage were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Woodyard, Ferrin DuBose, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Smith, Mrs. Bill Taylor, Mrs. Pete Haggard, Mrs. Jesse LeBlanc, Mabel Hill, Margaret Beaty, Mildred Alexander, Johnnie Herring, Mrs. M. P. Baker, W. C. Applegate, Milton Payne and Weldon Reeves, and Bob Brown, III. There probably were others whose names we do not have.
