Devereaux Yates Stewart
Funeral services for Devereaux Yates Stewart, age 96 of DeBerry, Texas, will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2008 DeBerry Baptist Church with Reverend Dick Sawyer, Reverend Eric Wilburn, and Reverend Hal Rymel officiating. Interment will follow at DeBerry Cemetery under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Saturday at the church. Mrs. Stewart passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2008 in Carthage, Texas.
Devereaux Yates Stewart was born in Panola County, Texas on August 8, 1911. She was one of five children born to the marriage of George R. and Ella D. Yates. Mrs. Stewart was schooled at Elysian Fields and Carthage schools. She was a homemaker and a retired U.S. Postal Worker at the DeBerry Post Office. She was a devoted member of DeBerry Baptist Church for most of her life. Mrs. Stewart loved to travel, fellowship with friends, enjoy her yard and flowers, and really lived life to the fullest. Mrs. Stewart loved working in her yard and decorating it for Christmas time. She won yard of the month and also an award for best decorated yard one Christmas. She was a member of Eastern Star, Panola County Historical Society, and the Potpourri Club. She was a founding member of the Texas Tea Room and a charter member of the DeBerry Community Center. Mrs. Stewart was a matriarch of DeBerry and the Yates family for 96 years. In her words, “I did not miss much.” She was preceded in death by husbands, Charlie Williams and John Wilbur Stewart; four brothers, Moody Yates, George T. Yates, Ned I. Yates, and Richard F. Yates; and her best friend and second cousin, Robert Pike.
Mrs. Stewart is survived by six nephews, Pat Yates and wife Judy of Shreveport, Mike Yates and wife Amy of Shreveport, Frank Yates and wife Linda of DeBerry, Darrell Yates and wife Kathy of DeBerry, Danny Yates of DeBerry, Dean Yates and wife Shelley of Carthage; three sisters-in-law, Grace Yates of DeBerry, Emma Jo Yates of Shreveport, and Mary Ellen Yates of DeBerry; a special friend, Hazel Pike of Carthage; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews who were close to her heart.
Serving as pallbearers will be her nephews whom she dearly loved and called “her boys.” Serving as an honorary pallbearer is Reverend Chris Campbell.
