Dorothy Gertrude Taunton Carrier
Dorothy Gertrude Taunton Carrier, passed away Monday, April 24, 2006, at Highland Farms Retirement Community in Black Mountain.
She was born November 8, 1910 in Birmingham, Ala. to Alonzo Jackson Taunton and Florence Agnes Harmon Taunton. She was the last survivor of eight children. Nell Gladys Taunton Wilson, her sister, passed away in 1989 in Black Mountain.
Mrs. Carrier was married to Abe McClellan Carrier in Miami, Fla. in 1934. She was employed by Florida National Bank for 38 years and became a Trust Officer with that bank. After retiring in 1971, she and Mr. Carrier moved to Black Mountain, building a home in Charmelde Acres. After her husband's death in 1980, Mrs. Carrier built a home on McCoy Cove Road and resided there until moving to Highland Farms in 1995.
Mrs. Carrier volunteered at the Miami Filter Center (an aircraft identification and tracking center) during World War II. In Black Mountain, she volunteered at the Chamber of Commerce, the Red Cross Blood Mobile, several area Thrift Shops and was a Poll Worker on Election Day. She was a registered Republican. Mrs. Carrier was an accomplished needlewoman and an avid Duplicate Bridge player. Her church affiliation was with the First Baptist Church of Black Mountain.
The graveside memorial service will be announced at a later date. She will be at rest beside her husband in Mountain View Memorial Park, Black Mountain.
She is survived by her niece Bette J. Upchurch, St. Augustine, Fla., a sister-in-law Mae Taunton, Thousand Oaks, Calif. and numerous other relatives.
Flowers are gratefully declined, and remembrances can be made to the Sid Croy Scholarship Fund of the Rotary Club of Black Mountain or the Scholarship Fund of the First Baptist Church of Black Mountain.
