Dorothy H. Duffy

Dorothy Hatten Duffy, 90, St. Augustine, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2011, with her children by her side.

Dot or Mam-Maw as she was known to friends and family, was born July 23, 1920, in Winnsboro, La., to Joel and Emma Hatten. She was the sixth of eight girls born to the Hattens.

She was raised a farm girl and a hard worker, taught by her mother to cook and sew. This raising served her well throughout her life as a devoted wife, mother and homemaker.

In January 1939, Dot married the love of her life, John Duffy. Together, they raised three children.

John and Dot moved to St. Augustine in 1985. They spent many days playing golf together at area golf courses. Through their love of this game, they made numerous friends.

They were married for 57 years before John's passing in 1996.

Mam-Maw did not recognize the words ``in laws.'' She accepted and loved all who were brought in to her family as if they were her own. She touched so many lives during her nearly 91 years. Her smile, sense of humor and loving nature will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Duffy is survived by her daughter, Diane Holland, of St. Augustine; her sons, Donald Duffy and his wife, Janet, of Townsville, S.C., and Dick Duffy and his wife, Andrea, of Tallahassee; a sister, Beryl Riggin, of West Monroe, La.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Duffy's family would like to say a special thank you to the people who took great care of her during her final days. These include Dr. Caroline Saunders and Saundra Rodriguez of Townsville, S.C., and Hospice of the Upstate, South Carolina.

Services will be held at Craig Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, July 20, 2011. Visitation will begin 1 p.m., with services at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Craig Memorial Park.

Craig Funeral Home Crematory Memorial Park is in charge of the arrangements.
