Douglas W. Shaw: 1930-2013
Douglas W. Shaw, 83, of Amarillo died Friday, July 19, 2013.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Cox Funeral Home Benton Chapel with the Rev. Jim Shelburne officiating. Arrangements are by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.
Doug was born June 15, 1930, in Winn Parish, La., to Owen and Vida Shaw. He was a graduate of Winnfield High School in Winnfield, La.
Doug served his country in the Army. In 1948, at age 18, he set foot in Japan and was introduced to his new job with the U.S. First Calvary, Infantry division. In 1950, Doug was chosen for the honor guard, which brought him to the offices of General Douglas MacArthur in Tokyo.
He moved to Amarillo in 1972 from Houston. He was a commercial truck driver all of his career. He drove for Levi Strauss for many years. He married Winnell Oakes in 1984 in Amarillo. Doug enjoyed his yard and making it beautiful. He was a sports fan and enjoyed watching football as well as Nascar. Most of all, he loved his family and spending time with them. He was a member of congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a stepson, Dave Oakes, in 2011.
Survivors include his wife, Winnell of Amarillo; a daughter, Sherrill Frank and husband Kerry; three stepdaughters, Pam Forgette and husband Mark, Teresa Beasley and Jan Hassinger and husband Mark, all of Amarillo; a sister, Margaret Rowell of Waco; six grandchildren, Matt, Aaron, Audrey, Eric, Justin and Haley; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to Washington Ave. Christian Church, 3800 S. Washington St., Amarillo, TX 79110; or Hospice of the Southwest, 1301 S. Coulter St., Suite 404, Amarillo, TX 79106.
