The Rev. E.S. Flynt, retired Baptist minister, dies at 82

The Rev. E.S. Flynt, 82, Seashore Manor Apartments, Biloxi, a retired Baptist minister who devoted 60 years of his life to Christian service, died Sunday morning in Howard Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for eight days.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock at the First Baptist Church of Biloxi. The Rev. Frank Gunn, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call this evening from 6 to 9 o'clock at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Biloxi or on Tuesday morning from 10 to 11 o'clock at the church.

The Rev. Mr. Flynt served for 15 years as pastor of the Handsboro Baptist Church, for 14 years as pastor of East Howard Baptist Church and for seven years at West Gulfport Baptist Church. He was instrumental in organizing several churchs on the Coast, the last two being Woolmarket and West Gulfport.

The Rev. Mr. Flynt was born Feb. 18, 1891, in Mt. Olive and graduated from Clark College, Mississippi College and the Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. His pastorates included churches in Kentucky, Indiana and Mississippi. He also spent several years as a missionary in the mountains of Kentucky.

He has served in numerous capacities on the Southern Baptist Convention Board and state board and was active in the Ministerial Association and also the Gulf Coast Association.

At the time of his death, he was an active member of the First Baptist church of Biloxi, was a member of the Men's Adult Choir and teacher of the Senior Adult Men's Class.

The Rev. Mr. Flynt was a 50-year member of the Masonic Order, 50 years in Blue Lodge and all Masonic bodies. He was a Shriner and a member of Hamassa Temple of Meridian, the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 200 and the Carpenter's Union Local 1667 (retired).

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mrs. Elizabeth Richardson Flynt, Biloxi; two daughters, Mrs. John (Earline) Bergin, Ocean Springs; and Mrs. R. B. (Ernestine) Sumrall, Handsboro; two brothers, Eldry Flynt and Alex Flynt, Mt. Olive; four sisters, Miss Viola Flynt and Miss Myrtie Flynt, Collins; Mrs. Dura Clark, Clinton; and Mrs. Tina Shoemaker, Hattiesburg; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
