Burial Sunday for Edgar E. Bushong, 85
Funeral services for Edgar Edward Bushong, 85, were held Sunday in the Leakey Methodist Church with Dr. Leon Patterson, pastor of the Trinity Baptist Church officiating. Interment was in the Garden of Memories, under the direction of the Smith Funeral Home. His death occurred Saturday at the Peterson Memorial Hospital after a two weeks' illness.
As a lad of 10 years he accompanied his parents, in a wagon drawn by pair of Oxen, to Colorado. They drove a heard [sic herd] of cattle and spent the winter on Pikes' Peak. In the spring they sold the cattle and wagon and went to the State of Washington, where they filed on government land and stayed there for several years. While in the west he and his father worked on the big dam and water reservoir which was being built.
As a young man he worked on the South Fork Ranch for Gus Schreiner and on another ranch on the Divide for ``Uncle Bimm'' Wharton, and was paid 50 cents a day for he was considered a ``top hand''.
He was married to Miss Maggie Mae Auld in 1909, and they lived on the Auld Ranch for about four years, when he bought a ranch of his own. Later they bought two more ranches, and since 1914 he had lived at his home ranch, near Leakey. Mrs. Bushong died in 1945.
He was active in the life of the community, served as county commissioner, member of the school board and worked in the livestock shows of the community, and donated the land for the show barns. He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge for many years.
He is survived by one son, Levi Bushong, of this city; two sisters, Mrs. Emil Leinweber, Kerrville and Mrs. E. I. Garven, Mountain Home, one brother, Clifford Bushong of Leakey, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were nephews and included Roy Leinweber, Talbot Garven, Ernest Leinweber, Luther Bushong, Archie McFadin, and Ralph Leinweber.
