Edwina Dunn Jones
“Winnie"
Shreveport, LA -- Edwina “Winnie” Dunn Jones died in Shreveport, Louisiana on September 4, 2014 at the age of 93. She was born Edwina Lorraine Dunn on July 28th, 1921, in Forest Hill, Louisiana. After graduating from Forest Hill High School, she graduated from Alexandria Business College where she learned secretarial and bookkeeping skills.
During World War II, she worked at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana in the Post Ordnance Office. After the war, she was working as a bookkeeper in Monroe, Louisiana when she met Arnott Lewis “Al” Jones. After a brief courtship, they married on November 24, 1948. They were a few months away from their 65th anniversary when Al died in 2013. Theirs was a long and happy marriage. Winnie considered herself to be a wife and a mother above all and she devoted her life to her family. She volunteered at both church and school as her three children grew up.
An accomplished seamstress, she created not only beautiful clothes but also shared musical and artistic talents generously.
When the time came, she put as much energy into being a grandmother as she had into being a mom. Known as “Gramma,” she was beloved of her ten grandchildren.
In retirement, she and Al traveled extensively and her favorite place to go was Hawaii. She was a member of the Shreveport Halcyon Club and served several times as president. She valued her friendships there. She was also a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Shreveport where she served for many years on the Altar Guild. She also volunteered there weekly as a Lutheran Braille worker making books for the blind for forty-three years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnott Lewis Jones, and grandson, Gordon Lewis Jones.
She is survived by three children: daughter Susan Denney and husband Michael of Shavertown, Pennsylvania, and sons Kevin Jones of Rowlett, Texas and Keith Jones and wife Sandra of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She will be missed by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers: F.J. Dunn of Graham, Texas and Bill Dunn of California, and by her sister-in-law Pat Dunn of New Brighton, PA.
A reception and visitation with the family will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2014, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 4175 Lakeshore Drive, Shreveport and the funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Forest Park Cemetery-East.
