Mr. Elbert Matthews

SAREPTA, LA. - Funeral services for Mr. Elbert Matthews, 77, will be held on 4:00 p.m. today at the Old Sarepta Baptist Church where he was a member and had served as Church Clerk. The Rev. Wayne Watson will be officiating. Burial will be in the Cotton Valley Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Mortuary Springhill.

Mr. Matthews a native and lifelong resident of this area past [sic passed] away Saturday, July 11, 1992 after a long illness. He was a retired employee of the C.V.O.C. with 18 years of service. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Navy and the first Postmaster of the Cullen, La. post office in 1937. He was a former member of the Webster Parish Police Jury and a former member of the Evergreen Seed and Feed Store in Cotton Valley, La.

Mr. Matthew[s] is preceded in death by his wife, Sibyl Sikes Matthews on February 13, 1992 and a son, Sherman Elbert Matthews on October 24, 1972.

He is survived by a son, Dale Matthews; one sister, Claudia Matthews; and one brother, Rev. Victor Matthews all of Sarepta, La.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Thompson, Joe Blair, Delbert Fuller, Billy Odom, Bob Seiple and Buddy Skaggs.
