Pass Tax Collector Stricken

Elwood A. Abbley, 64, of Pass Christian, died early Friday morning after being striken [sic stricken] while attending a shrimp dinner Thursday night at Municipal Officers Association convention at Buena Vista Hotel, Biloxi.

Mr. Abbley, Pass Christian's city clerk and tax collector since 1957, was pronounced dead on arrival at 12:30 a.m. at Howard Memorial Hospital.

Earlier this year Mr. Abbley was hospitalized for treatments of a heart ailment. He returned to work in March. In more recent weeks, Mr. Abbley began to devote full time to his job and attended night sessions of the city council.

Mr. Abbley was born Nov. 22, 1904, in Biloxi, but had resided in Pass Christian for most of his life.

He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, the Pass Christian Yacht Club, Pass Christian Carnival Association and the Mississippi Municipal Officers Association.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Doris Spradley Abbley, Pass Christian; two daughters, Mrs. Clyde L. (Brenda) Kreeger, San Bernardino, Cal.; Mrs. Joseph G. (Jean) Lopez, New Orleans; three grandchildren; one brother, R. V. Abbley, Pass Christian; and two sisters, Mrs. Robert Van Court and Mrs. Ione Russell, Pass Christian.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Riemann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elwood Abbley

The funeral service for Elwood A. Abbley, 64, Pass Christian city clerk and tax collector who died Thursday, will be held Monday afternoon at 1:45 from Riemann Funeral Home Chapel in Pass Christian followed by religious services at 2 p.m. in St. Paul's Catholic Church. Interment will be in Live Oak Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday after 6 p.m. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 8 p.m.
