Emette Earl McCarty
(March 19, 1925 - September 6, 2014)

Emette Earl McCarty died at his home in the Edon Community on September 6, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 9 at First Baptist Church, Soso with Dr. Jim Taylor officiating. The body will be placed in the Church at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Interment will follow at Edon Cemetery in Jasper County.

Mr. McCarty was born March 19, 1925 in Smith County to the late Mr. and Mrs. Raymond McCarty. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at Edon Baptist Church as a youth and was later ordained a deacon in that congregation. He was graduated from Stringer High School. Mr. McCarty served in the United States Navy during WWII as a gunner's mate aboard the destroyer USS Gainard during the invasion of Okinawa and the occupation of Japan. He was discharged from active duty in 1946 and returned home to begin a farming and ranching career. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952. In 1962 he married the former Jeanette Herrington of Sharon. They homesteaded on their farm in Smith and Jasper Counties. He was a member of Soso Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Mr. McCarty was active in The Agricultural Mission Foundation throughout his adult life.

Mr. McCarty was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond McCarty, and a brother Mr. Edsel McCarty (Ada).

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette; his son, Ethan; and daughter Freda Byrd (Neil); two sisters, Glaneice Roberts (Charles) and Joyce White (Johnny); one brother, Melton McCarty (Helen); a sister-in-law, Ada McCarty; two grandsons, Landon Byrd (Lindsey) and Edward Byrd, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers at Tuesday's service will be Donis Jefcoat, Steven Jefcoat, Keith Parker, Oscar Montgomery, Mike Smith and Joe Herrington.

Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, September 8, 2014 at Memory Chapel which is in charge of the arrangements.
