Esther Jones Matthews

Smithfield -- Esther Jones Matthews, 90, formerly of Galilee Road, died Thursday afternoon at Britthaven of Smithfield. Born on September 20, 1917 in Johnston County, she was the daughter of the late Jim P. Jones and Amanda Lee Jones. Esther was a retired caregiver, homemaker, and a lifelong member of Hopewell Free Will Baptist Church. She was the widow of James Raeford Matthews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, July 12, 2008 in the chapel of Underwood Funeral Home in Smithfield, with Rev. Scott Casey and Rev. Ed Gonzales officiating. Burial will follow at Hills of the Neuse Memory Gardens.

Surviving are: sons, Steve W. Matthews of Smithfield and his wife, Joy, and Kermit A. Matthews of Surf City; grandchildren, William Matthews of Smithfield, Steve Matthews, Jr. of South Carolina, Jeff Matthews of Snead's Ferry; 7 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 AM until 12:00 Noon on Saturday, immediately prior to the funeral service.
