CHILDERS, Fred C., 80,

passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Porter Childers; his son, Norman and wife, Kitty; his son, Jim and wife, Barbara; granddaughter, Alisa Cornwall and husband, Will, and their son, Trevor; granddaughter, K.C. Stevens and husband, Rick; granddaughter, Amanda Mitchell and husband, Chris; sister, Merlene Bradford; and brother, Milton Childers and wife, Edee.

Fred was born in Monroe, Louisiana, and resided in Miami before moving to Tampa in 1980. Fred was retired, having worked for many years for Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company in Miami, earning his CLU designation during his years in management. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a Tech Sgt. in the Army Air Corps. He received an Air Medal for 25 combat missions flown while stationed in England. Fred and Betty were also faithful workers for many years in Hillsborough County's SERVE volunteer program and together they received several awards and recognitions for their dedication to the school children in this area. Fred was a member of Lake Carroll Baptist Church where he was recently appointed Deacon Emeritus. He had also served as a deacon at Central Baptist Church in Miami. Fred loved the Lord and served faithfully at his church, helping with choirs, greeting newcomers and being a very special "Mr. C." to hundreds of children through the years. He had a servant's heart and brought joy to others each day of his life.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 4, 2001, 10:00 a.m. at Blount, Curry and Roel Funeral Home, Carrollwood Chapel, Bearss Avenue, Tampa. Pallbearers will be Frank Cox, Ron Garcia, Robert Perry, Jeff Smith, Jim Smith, and Rick Stratton. Honorary pallbearers include Paul Garrett and the Deacons of Lake Carroll Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the funeral home chapel on Sunday afternoon, June 3, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
