Mrs. Florence Amy rites held today

Funeral service were held today, January 2 at 10:30 a.m. in the First Baptist Church for Florence Corley Amy, 98, who died at Landmark Infirmary on December 30, 1995. Officiating for the services were Dr. George Higgins, Rev. Charles Bennett, Rev. Glen Howie and Rev. Alan Knuckles.

Mrs. Amy will be remembered as a guidance counselor and mathematics teacher in the Iota and Crowley schools from 1928 to 1962.

Her activities as a teacher/sponsor included the 4-H Club in both schools; the Future Teachers of America, (for which she wrote the official state song), at Crowley High; the Crowley High Student Council, (for which she also wrote the official state song). She will be remembered too as the author of the Crowley High School Alma Mater and as a Senior class sponsor during her tenure as a teacher.

She was a former president and member of the Acadia Parish Teachers Association, a member of the Louisiana Teachers Association and the National Teachers Association. As a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International she was a past chapter president of Xi Chapter in Acadia Parish and past State President of Epsilon State, Louisiana. She received the coveted State Achievement Award from Epsilon State in 1984.

A member of the First Baptist Church she had been the assistant church pianist, the Sunday School Superintendent, Training Union Director, Woman's Missionary Union President and a Sunday School teacher.

Mrs. Amy was a former president and active member of the Attakapas Study Club, having been president of the club in the 60s. She was also a member of Crowley Chapter 74 Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis A. Amy, her parents, six sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include her daughter, Joanna Leigh Pruitt, son-in-law Albert Pruitt, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Mildred Lee of San Antonio, Texas.

The family requests that any memorials be given to the First Baptist Church Mission Projects or Louisiana College in Pineville.

Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements, burial taking place at the Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum.
