Auto Accident Fatal to Floyd Newman

A 32 year old Newellton man, Floyd Newman, met his death this week when his car went out of control in the "Osceola Curve" about four miles north of St. Joseph.

The accident occur[r]ed at dusk, 6 p.m., Monday evening, February 17th, when Newman, alone in his car was en route to St. Joseph. The car was completely demolished.

A number of accidents have occurred at this same spot but this is believed to be the first fatal accident here. The curve is not severe but is considered treacherous becouse [sic because] it is often misjudged.

Newman was a school bus operator at Newellton High School, a member of the Bethany Baptish [sic Baptist] Church and a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict.

Funeral services were held Thursday at the Bethany Baptist Church with Rev. J. B. Greer and Rev. H. M. Roach officiating.

Interment followed in the American Legion Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Crothers Funeral Home of Tallulah.

Mr. Newman is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laverne Harper Newman, three sons, Tommy, Lloyd and Floyd of Newellton; two brothers, James Wyly [sic Wiley] Newman of Moscoutah [sic Mascoutah], Illinois and Raymond Newman of Baskin.
