Patriotic Sikes Youth, 14, Joins Navy; Discharged
The patriotic feeling that ``this is every American's war'' was probably the
motive which prompted 14 year old Fontaine Emmons of Sikes to join the Navy
about six weeks ago. Young Emmons enlisted at the Shreveport recruiting
station, as a 17 year old, using his brother's birth certificate. He entered
service as Glenroy Emmons.
His parents notified the Naval authorities that their son was only 14 years
old and after undergoing three weeks of his ``boot'' training in San Diego,
Calif., the young Apprentice Seaman was given an honorable release from
service.
Young Emmons is a tenth grade student in the Sikes High School and is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Winfred S. Emmons of Sikes.
