Fred Sherman, Vet Coal County Peace Official, Is Dead
COALGATE -- (Special) -- Fred Sherman, widely known Coalgate resident, died Monday afternoon, presumably from a heart attack. He was 68 years old.
Sherman, for the past few years, had been acting as the city's night watchman. In the November elections, he was also chosen as city constable and was holding both posts until a replacement for his job as night watchman could be found.
He is the third Coalgate city employee to die in less than 45 days. Recently, death claimed Coalgate's mayor and water superintendant.
Sherman was born in Lanno [sic Llano] County, Texas. He served as sheriff of Coal county from 1922 to 1928 and in 1928 accepted a job as special agent with the Rock Island Railroad, serving in that capacity until he retired, when he took over his night watchman duties.
Sherman is survived by his wife, Myrtle, of the home address; five sons, Melvin, Fairfield, Ill.; Albert, Hobbs, N. M.; Buster, Long Beach, Calif.; Ray, Kansas City, Kan., and L. B., Odessa; two brothers, Orville, Coalgate, and Earl, Paramount, Calif.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Slater's Funeral Home.
