Dr. Frellsen F. Smith

Funeral services for Dr. Frellsen F. Smith, 84, of Ruston, La. will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 1992 at the Ruston Church of God with the Rev. Kenneth Toler officiating, assisted by the Rev. Charles Smith and the Rev. Gordon Finley. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston. Dr. Smith died on Saturday, July 25, 1992 at Lincoln General Hospital in Ruson following a brief illness. Services will be under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston.

Dr. Smith was born in Winn Parish on January 27, 1908 and was son to Dr. C.W. and Clara (Fletcher) Smith. He was a member of the Ruston Church of God which his father established and where he faithfully served in various capacities of leadership which includes Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Sunday School teacher for many years and also for four years was either chairman or vice-chairman of the Louisiana Assembly of the Church of God. Dr. Smith graduated from Louisiana Tech in 1927 then went on to teach English and History at Simsboro High School. He received his masters degree in English from the University of Texas and attended Harvard University in 1930 and 1931. In 1936 he became head of the English Department at Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe of which he was a charter member, it was then called Ouachita Parish Junior College. Then in 1938 he became a member of Louisiana Tech faculty and was an English professor there until his retirement in 1972. Dr. Smith married the former Myrtle Carver of Simpson, La. in 1934.

Dr. Smith is survived by his wife, Myrtle Caver [sic Carver] Smith of Ruston; three daughters, Anita Womack of Anderson, Ind., Marie Riggs of Ruston, Lorna Kardatzke of Wichita, Kan.; two sons, Charles Smith of Lake Wales, Fl., Alvin Smith of Baton Rouge, La.; and a sister, Florine Martin of Ruston; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Joel Riggs, Scott Kardatzke, Paul Womack, Dave Riggs, Joe Womack and Jon Kardatzke. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Griswold, Jake Martin, John Trisler, J. B. Martin, Carroll Bailey, Paul Foreman, Arthur Bruce and Bobbie Williams.

The family request any planned memorials may be made to the Ruston Church of God in Ruston, La.

Visitation hours will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
