George Barney Sterling
George Barney Sterling, 82, of Liberty, died at his home on Jan. 14, 2005, after a lengthy illness.
Visitation is 6 to 9 tonight at Tower Hill Church on Highway 569. Visitation continues Monday from noon until services at the church at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Doug Akins and the Rev. Jack Whittington officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Church of God of Prophecy Cemetery, with Brown Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Sterling was born Aug. 18, 1922, in Amite County to James Ferd Sterling and Carrie Elizabeth Whittington Sterling.
He was a Master Craftsman and a farmer and served in the Navy as a 3rd class petty officer during World War II. He attended Tower Hill Full Gospel Church.
His family said he was loved and will be missed by relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters, two brothers and his wife, Mary Odeil Sterling.
Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kelvin and Paulette Sterling and Paul Sterling, all of Liberty, and Melvin and Peggy Sterling of Ponchatoula, La.; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Glenda and Tommy Whittington of Searcy, Ark., Mary and Nathan Temple and Shirley Toney, all of Liberty, and Patty and Woody Rollins of Gloster; 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Jonathan Temple, Brent Sterling,Scott Sterling, Aaron Watts, Jeffery Whittington and Ashley Watts. Honorary pallbearers are grandsons, Jarrod Whittington, Matthew Sterling, Jason Whittington, Joel Whittington and Nicolas Rollins.
