DEATH ENDS HALF CENTURY OF SERVICE FOR AGED ENGINEER

George Winfred Smith, 74, of 415 Common street, engineer for the Louisiana and Arkansas railroad, died at 2 a.m. Thursday in a local sanitarium after a short illness. He had been a resident of Shreveport for 20 years, and a railroad employe for 50 years.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. G. W. Smith; four daughters, Miss Birdie Lee Smith, Mrs. William Lanigan, Miss Mira Ann Smith, all of Shreveport, and Mrs. A. P. Waggoner of Natchez, Miss.; a son, George I. Smith of Winnfield; and a brother, Jasper N. Smith of Sykes [sic Sikes], La.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at Wellman funeral chapel, with the Rev. Ira Peak, pastor of the Queensborough Baptist church, officiating. Burial will be in Centuries Memorial Park cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Alton Martin, Albert Martin, Albert Martin, Jr., William A. Lanigan, Jr., William Smith and Arthur Warwick.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
