Dr. G.W. Smith Succumbs Here

Dr. George Washington Smith, retired Alexandria physician and former assistant coroner of Rapides Parish, died at 9:20 a.m. Sunday at his residence, 1936 Thornton Court.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Flora Smith; a son, Bobbie George Smith of Houston, Texas; three grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were to be held at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Hixson Bros. Funeral Home. Burial was to be in Greenwood Memorial Park.

Dr. Smith was a native of Navasota, Texas. He graduated from Allen Academy in Bryan, Texas, from the Baylor School of Medicine in 1905, and Tulane School of Medicine in 1910.

He was a member of the medical staff at Baptist Hospital, a member of the Rapides Parish Medical Society, the Louisiana State Medical Society and the American Medical Society.

He was assistant coroner under Drs. L. F. Magruder, Marvin Cappel, S. L. Calhoun and W. L. Murrell.

Dr. Smith received a 50-year service pin from the Louisiana State Medical Society in 1958. He had been a resident of Alexandria since 1912.

He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist church and president of the church's men's Bible class.
