BUCHANAN

GLENDA ANN PONDER BUCHANAN was born in Jackson, MS on December 1, 1934 and was 66 years of age at the time of her death on October 28, 2001. She attended school in Little Rock, AR and graduated from Little Rock Central High School in 1953. Glenda attended the University of Oklahoma, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.

She and John Buchanan met at the University in 1956 and were married at Bull Shoals, AR, on September 6, 1958. Glenda and John have three sons, two daughters-in-law, and six grandchildren. All three sons attended schools in the Spring Branch Independent School District. The oldest son, John, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southwestern University at Georgetown, TX and a Master's degree from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, CA. Twin son Scot, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University, Waco, TX. Twin Trey received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University and Master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH. Scot and wife Michelle reside in Dallas, TX, and are parents of Davis, Madison and Ellie. Trey and Adrian reside in Wheaton, IL, and are parents of Matthew and twin sons Duncan and Douglas. Glenda is also survived by her brother Charles Hoover and wife Sherry of Bull Shoals, AR.

Glenda and John lived in Australia, Venezuela, England and Norway. They lived in Houston for almost 30 years. Glenda worked almost ten years in the business world, serving three years with a retail bookstore as co-manager and seven years with a commercial real estate development firm in Houston as receptionist and assistant to management. Glenda served as elder, deacon and Sunday school teacher at Memorial Drive Christian Church, as well as being a member of various church committees. Glenda held offices in local PTA organizations and was co-coordinator of the Spring Branch Independent School District's initial district-wide volunteer program in 1979. Glenda was Past-President and newsletter co-editor for the two-hundred member Volunteer Service of Memorial Hermann-Memorial City Hospital. She also served as Legislative Chairman, Recording Secretary, President-Elect and President. She served on the Board of Directors of the Scholarship Fund of the Volunteer Service and was elected President of the fund committee in 1998. In April of 1994, Glenda became a member of the Bio-Ethics Committee of Memorial Hermann-Memorial City Hospital. She has served on the Board of Directors of Memorial Board of Directors of Memorial Hermann Healthcare Systems. In 1996, Glenda became the Founder of the Community Computer Learning Center at Memorial Hermann-Memorial City Hospital, where scores of West Houston residents developed basic skills in computer usage. Glenda was an avid reader and co-founded a book study group, Buchanan Brown & Books, in 1992. She presented book reviews to Houston area book clubs.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at Memorial Drive Christian Church, 11750 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77024, with Rev. Todd Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway.

Pallbearers: Bill Hamilton, Hank Wheeler, Bob Brezina, Don Elder, Jr., Marshall Meece, and Pete McReynolds. Honorary Pallbearers: Jim and Joyce Stones, Bob and Carleen Woods, Bob and Kay Bryant, Lindsey and Dee Lipscomb, and Sally and Chris Vogel.
