GORDIE WHITTINGTON

Funeral services were held for Gordie Whittington, 88, of Gloster, Friday, May 8, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Gloster. Rev. Stacy McCollum officiated. Burial was in Roseland Cemetery in Gloster.

Mr. Whittington passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at Field Memorial Community Hospital in Centreville.

Born November 26, 1920, in Amite County, Mr. Whittington was the son of Pearl and Myrtis Bass Whittington, both deceased.

Mr. Whittington was a historical building restorer with the National Park Service. He was a longtime member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church near Gloster and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Whittington was preceded in death by his first wife, Bennie Floyd Whittington; second wife, Helen Reeves Whittington; third wife, Elmerita Durr Whittington; a brother, Richard Whittington; two sisters, Thelma and Virgie Etheridge; and three brothers in-law, Fairly Etheridge, Russell Etheridge and Soulé Whittington.

Mr. Whittington is survived by four brothers, Linus Whittington and wife Bonnie, and Virgil Whittington, all of Gloster, Robert Whittington of Baton Rouge, and Harold Whittington and wife Sue of Greenville, S.C.; a sister, Frances Mitchell of Gloster; a sister-in-law, Lorena Whittington of Centreville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
