Grady Anders
Grady Anders quietly departed this life surrounded by his family on Thursday, November 15, 2007 after a lengthy illness at the age of 84. Retired from Otis Elevator Co. after serving Brazos Valley and surrounding counties for over 35 years he and his wife Frances moved from Bryan to Austin in 2002. He lived with his son, David at the Clairmont Retirement Community in Austin. Those who knew Grady still remember his flourishing garden. More than a hobby for him, the garden was a ministry welcoming people to gather as much as they needed as he humbly shared the earth's bounty.
As a member of Beacon Baptist Church since the mid 1980's, he was regularly working around the church cleaning, repairing, or any other chore that might promote the House of God. Widows knew any job was no problem for ``Mr. Grady''. With a true servant's heart he gave his time and talents as well as used his other hobbies (fishing, hunting, and of course gardening). His retirement years were full of simple and humble living.
Born in the small rural community of Jersey, Arkansas, he was one of eight children of Silas & Nettie Anders. A veteran of WWII, he served in the Pacific, but became disabled and spent the final months of the war in a hospital bed at Fort Sam Houston. During his adult life, he lived in Pasadena, Bryan, and later Austin, Texas.
Grady's deep faith in God and strong love for his family defined him as a man, leaving a legacy of lives touched by prayer and kindness. He is survived by three children -- David Anders and Ida James both of Austin, and dk (Kay) Speaks of Fort Worth. ``Pappy's'' 6 grandchildren are: Ken Speaks, Jr. (Austin), Laurie Henderson (Katy), Kevin Speaks (Dallas), Danielle Alfano (Fort Worth), Grady Speaks (Los Angeles, CA), and Grant James (Austin) as well as eleven great-grandchildren. Francis, his wife of 57 years, predeceased him in 2003.
The funeral will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in Austin on Tuesday November 20th at 10 a.m. with family receiving guests Monday night from 6-8 p.m. Interment is scheduled at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery where he will be buried with military honors.
``... The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.'' James 5:16b
