Gus L. Alford

Funeral services for Gus L. Alford, age 43, of Columbia, who passed away at the Caldwell hospital as the result of burns received from gas explosion in his home in Lakeside addition, were held on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Columbia Baptist church with the Rev. Cline D. Ellis in charge, assisted by Rev. Donald Farrow of Columbia, Rev. J. D. Kitchingham of the Eastside, and Rev. G. F. Steinbaugh of Delhi.

Interment was made in the Columbia Hill cemetery under the direction of the Riser Funeral Home of Columbia.

Alford was burned early Monday morning while attempting to put out a fire that swept his home following an explosion. He died in the local hospital at 7:20 Monday evening... The cause of the explosion has not been definitely determined.

Mr. Alford was born and reared in Caldwell parish, being a graduate of the Columbia High school.

His father was the late Gus L. Alford, Sr., who for years was a local attorney. His mother preceded him in death a short time ago.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. L. P. Woodard of Delhi, and five children. The children are: Mary Lou, Jo Ann and Linda Alford, and Gus L. Alford, Jr., and Mike Alford.

Pallbearers were Tipton McKnight, Neil Riser, Roy Childers, Glenn Tarver, Harold Bauman and Wilbur McGrew.

Honorary pallbearers: Coach Robert Cocheran and members of the Columbia High school football team.
